Require greater priority for pedestrians at pedestrian-operated traffic lights

Petition Details

Introduce legislation to scrap any time delay following the button-push at pedestrian and cyclist crossings, and the lights starting to change. This should include but not be limited to Pelican, Puffin and Toucan crossings.

Additional Information

This time delay could be set to longer if the button has been pushed within the last minute, for example, or at major junctions.

Being a pedestrian is a primary mode of transport for almost everyone. We believe there is still too much priority given to motorised traffic in urban spaces over people. This can make travelling as a non-motorised user more inconvenient and give rise to a perception of inferiority from those on the footway. Many push-button crossings are simply not utilised as intended because they take too long to activate, or are activated and not used when intended. This can also create a safety risk at crossings.
