Review the use of force & segregation on prisoners with mental health conditions
We believe prison staff resort too quickly to disciplinary action when dealing with prisoners who suffer from mental health conditions.
We seek a thorough review of the treatment of prisoners with mental health conditions, specifically examining the use of force and segregation.
The treatment of prisoners is subject to a range of national and international laws, norms and standards, including the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
We believe the excessive use of force and the inappropriate use of segregation on prisoners with mental health conditions can amount to torture, inhumane or degrading treatment.
A review could identify whether specific provisions need to be implemented to better address the needs and vulnerabilities of prisoners with mental health conditions.
