Petition Action

Pay fair compensation now to all the postmasters wrongly accused

Petition Details

Pay compensation immediately to the postmasters falsely accused by the Post Office for accounting errors due to the Horizon computer system

Additional Information

There has already been years of delay in compensating people who were falsely accused of either false accounting or theft by the Post Office. They have been financially and reputationally ruined and should now be fairly and fully compensated before they die

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There are a number of compensation schemes for those affected by the Horizon scandal. These are summarised here:
corporate.postoffice.co.uk/en/horizon-scandal-pages/post-office-compensation-schemes

The schemes include:
• Overturned Convictions Scheme: scheme for those who have had their convictions overturned – a £600,000 offer, or people can proceed to a full assessment of their individual claim
• Group Litigation Order Scheme: for those who were part of the action Alan Bates and Others v Post Office Ltd pursued under a Group Litigation Order – a £75,000 offer, or people can continue to a full assessment of their individual claim

The Government made further announcements on its response to the scandal on 10 January, including announcing its plans to overturn the convictions of all those convicted in England or Wales on the basis of Post Office evidence given during the Horizon scandal. Further information can be found here: hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2024-01-10/debates/3DDD9684-C08D-4E5E-AF73-CF85839412AB/PostOfficeHorizonScandal

If you think there should be changes to the compensation arrangements, you could start a petition clearly explaining what changes you would like to see.
