Reform legislation to better protect horses and riders from dogs

Petition Details

We want dangerous dogs legislation updated to better protect horses and riders from dogs, including by making it clear in law that any dog that causes nuisance to or attacks a horse or rider is treated as a dangerous dog.

Additional Information

We believe the current law is too vague, and does not adequately protect horses or their riders. There has been a reported increase in incidents between horse riders and dog owners. We think the current law doesn’t cover the issue properly and needs updating to be clearer and ensure safety for all using the countryside.

We want:

1) Clear and concise legislation specifically about horse and riders to be implemented into the Dangerous Dogs Act.
2) Penalties for the dog owners proportionate to the severity of the incident.
3) Leash laws for bridleways and byways.
