Maintain 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Of Mice and Men' and other classic literature on the GCSE curriculum
"Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
Recently announced reforms to the OCR English Literature GCSE have included a syllabus restructuring that will see the removal of non-British twentieth century literature.
This will exclude many twentieth century classics that have captured the imaginations of thousands of teenagers including Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and John Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men'.
Furthermore, it is reported that such novels were excluded from the curriculum due to the personal tastes of Education Secretary Michael Gove.
It appears the Mr Gove could do well to remind himself of Atticus Finch's lessons about respect for those that are different or foreign to us.
We ask that the Department for Education and exam boards revise tight curriculum restrictions be revised so that international twentieth century literature remains a core part of the English curriculum.
