Petition Action

All councils to publish how our council tax is spent clearly and in detail

Petition Details

Make it compulsory for all councils to itemise collected council tax expenditure . Not just Adult social care , police commissioner and town council but a more detailed breakdown

Additional Information

Every year we see increases in the council tax we pay yet a reduction in services . For example our village has serious drainage issues but we are told that there is only one lorry that can do this work and it will be 8/9 months before it can get to us . It is well known that all of this type of work can be contracted out . We are told gritting is getting cut and street lighting all while our taxes increase

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Council tax includes a number of elements, which are shown on council tax bills. For spending on local services, council tax is one of several sources of revenue for local authorities, and local authorities are already required to publish information about their accounts, including details of spending.

You can find out more about the information councils publish about their spending, and how to find this, here: www.gov.uk/understand-how-your-council-works/spending-and-accounts

If you are concerned about spending decisions in your area, you could raise your concerns with a local councillor who represents you. You can find out who your local councillors are, and how to contact them, by entering your post code here: www.gov.uk/find-your-local-councillors

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to require local authorities to share more detailed information about local spending with residents, if that's what you want to happen.
