Harsher sentences for knife-related offences - act as a powerful deterrent
The minimum sentence from 6 months to one year and the maximum from 4 years to 6 years.
This increase in knife-related crime demands swift and effective action. Introducing tougher sentences for these offences is one option. Rehabilitation too, where possible.
Tackling sales of illegal weapons.
The number of knife/sharp instrument recorded offences by the Met Police rose to approximately 12,786 in 2022/23, compared with 11,122 in 2021/2022.
There has been a 76% increase in knife offences in the last 10 years (up to June 2023.)
Although, figures show just 31.9 per cent of offenders caught with a knife were handed immediate prison terms in the year ending March 2023. So, the Government, Courts to get tougher in order to protect the innocent.
