Extended Paternity Leave in the UK: A Vital Support for New Mothers and Babies
Postnatal depression, experienced by many parents after childbirth, affects over 1 in 10 women within a year of giving birth in the United Kingdom. Providing extended paternity leave is a crucial step toward supporting mothers, fostering the well-being of families, and creating lasting bonds.
In the UK, fathers or partners are currently entitled to a mere 1 or 2 weeks.
Contrastingly, countries like Spain, Norway, Iceland, Slovenia, and Sweden have recognized the importance of paternity leave. In Spain, paternity leave spans a substantial 16 weeks, with the initial 6 weeks being mandatory and continuous.
Benefits: Bonding Time, Reduced Postnatal Depression Risk, Equitable Roles
