Create a statutory regulator for senior managers in the NHS
Legislate for a regulatory system, analogous to the GMC, for senior NHS managers to help ensure patient safety. Ensure the system enables anyone; patient, relative, staff member to report a senior NHS manager (eg. an NHS trust CEO) where they have concerns.
Working in the NHS, talking to colleagues and reading in the media, I am concerned that when senior NHS managers make bad decisions, there is no regulator to report them to or flag concerns with. I don't think there is an adequate safety net to protect patient care or prevent serious mistakes being made or perpetuated. If senior managers were regulated by a system analogous to the GMC, where they can be reported, investigated and struck off if needed, I believe this would provide an invaluable safety net for patient care.
