Petition Action

Urgent action required from the foreign office to pressure Myanmar government for the release of 5 Buddhist monks including Venerable U Uttara

Additional Information

Call for urgent action from the UK Government to ensure the safety and immediate release of 5 Buddhist monks including Venerable U Uttara who is a British Citizen, a Buddhist Chaplain at the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London, UK.

The Venerable U Uttara, a leading Monk of Burmese community in the UK and five other monks were evicted from a monastery in Yangon and detained by Myanmar officials at the early hours of 11th June 2014 . The eviction was said to be due to the dispute of the ownership of the Monastery where the monks were residing. On 13th June 2014, they were forcefully disrobed from their monkhood. They are currently under arrest as civilians and said to be imprisoned in Insein Jail Yangon, Myanmar.

The Myanmar community is very concerned about the safety and well being of these monks and urge for the urgent action from the Foreign Office.
