tourette's syndrome
People training to be social workers or therapists need to know that people with Tourette’s Syndrome (and people who have reactions to foods which cause similar symptoms), do not blurt things out because they’re “aggressive”, but because their brain is too stressed to access their vocabulary or keep quiet ~ it is a physical condition not a mental attitude, whereas racial and (eg) homophobic comments are mental attitudes.
These issues need to be fully addressed in the syllabus of students planning to provide a service to such clients.
A public awareness campaign would also help prevent further misunderstandings, like those mentioned above, which adversely affect the everyday lives of those with e.g. Tourettes Syndrome.
