Standardise Women’s Titles as "Ms" and Eliminate Titles Based on Marital Status
1. Update legal documents, government forms, and public records to include only the title "Ms" for women. 2. Eliminate "Miss" and "Mrs." as options on official forms, correspondence, and in public records. 3. Launch a public awareness campaign to educate citizens and organisations.
The distinction originates from when a woman’s societal worth was tied to her relationship with a man. "Miss" is often used to denote divorced women, making their marital history public. We think this is problematic in settings like schools, where titles are displayed everywhere; and contradicts the Equality Act 2010, prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, and other protected characteristics. France and Germany, have eliminated titles based on marital status for women.
