Review of compensation for those wrongfully imprisoned
I want a government review of compensation for those who have been wrongfully imprisoned, including levels of compensation which I think are too low. I want this review to include the timeframes that decide what compensation is awarded, as I believe they are currently too broad.
At the moment there are two different limits to the compensation that can be awarded depending on whether the applicant spent less than or more than 10 years in prison. I believe these timeframes are too broad. I think the current compensation levels are not reflective of time lost, making it difficult for someone to get their life back on track who has been wrongfully imprisoned for a long period. I also want the review to consider taxation to ensure these payments are clearly tax exempt as I believe it is only fair that compensation is not taxed.
If you want to sign this petition (as opposed to merely discuss it), you need to do that on the government's e-Petitions website.
