Tax relief for sustainable travel costs

Additional Information

Introduce tax relief for commuters using sustainable transport means such as rail, bus and tube/metros.

Reason: Travel Poverty - More than 40% of salary is going on commuting.

Mechanism: set up something similar to what is currently available for child care vouchers or new childcare voucher system (80p spent 20p back). Needs to be accessible for part-time workers who cannot benefit from season tickets too.

Result: boost in economy as people spend more whilst travelling; eases the housing crisis in areas such as London as people can afford to commute further from areas where housing costs are cheaper; fewer cars on the road as public transport becomes cheaper option

Departments: HMRC (wasn't in your list) ; Treasury: Department for Transport; Department for Energy and Climate Change.
