Review the criminal justice system.
We believe there is a disconnect between the basic values of common decency held by the public and those reflected in the criminal justice system. Many consider it unacceptable for suspended sentences to be issued for sexual crimes, particularly those involving minors. We think a review is needed.
If the criminal justice system holds lower moral standards than the public it represents, we believe it risks undermining respect for the system and, consequently, adherence to law and order.
We think that, as a matter of urgency, the criminal justice system requires a thorough review to understand why judges are issuing sentences that we consider are too lenient for crimes that represent a significant breach of trust.
Failing to address this issue could not only weaken law and order within the country but also damage our international reputation.
