Petition Action

Make automatic dissolution of Parliament every 4 years

Petition Details

Change the existing law (Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022) to require parliament to be dissolved automatically after four years, instead of five.

Additional Information

We think holding general elections approximately every 4 years, would give the public more opportunities to choose which candidate should represent them in Parliament.

In 2010, The House of Lords Constitution Committee said that to properly hold MPs in the House of Commons to account, more frequent general elections should be held.

We think it would be very simple to amend the existing law, which would allow voters to more regularly participate in democracy.
