Make debating a GCSE subject choice in the National Curriculum.
As a keen debater - a co-curricular activity that is run at lunch times at my High School - it confuses me how this is not an actual subject taught in lessons.
The reason why I'm confused is because the ability to communicate formally, cogently and confidently via the medium of speech is paramount in today's society and is a skill that is currently not taught - or seldom taught - in the classroom.
It also teaches children about current affairs/political debates etc. (i.e. the subject I am currently debating is 'This House Would Ban Extremist Groups from Media Platforms;' a propsal similar to the Home Secretary Thersa May's propsal about cracking down on extremism). This is important since it makes children aware of politics of this country, ethical debates etc. which are again seldom taught (with the exception of RS) in the current education system; thanks for reading and I hope you consider my proposal.
