Review of the Maintenance Loan System in Student Finance
We request a review of the UK Maintenance Loan system, which ignores household expenses, dependents, and living costs. Many students receive insufficient support, leaving families struggling. A fairer system should consider real financial need to ensure all students can afford their education.
We propose reforming the Maintenance Loan system to:
1. Consider not just parental income but also household expenses and dependents.
2. Provide equal loan amounts to all students, as the loan supports them and is repaid later.
3. Adjust loans based on regional living costs to cover essentials like rent, food, and transport.
This would ensure fair access to education, preventing financial struggles from affecting students’ studies.
