Allow Bathroom Access Based on Gender Identity
Allow bathroom access based on gender identity, focus safeguarding on behaviour not identity, and provide private facilities where needed to protect everyone’s safety and dignity. Inclusive bathroom policies protect trans people, women, and children without increasing risk.
Transgender people face higher risks of harassment and violence when forced into bathrooms that don't match their gender identity. Evidence shows that inclusive access does not increase assaults. Safeguarding should focus on behaviour, not identity. Respecting gender identity protects the dignity and safety of all, including women and children. Forcing trans women into male spaces and trans men into female spaces creates more harm. Inclusive policies are safer, fairer, and based on evidence.
