The BBC must be protected from privatisation

The BBC belongs to the Licence payers, not to the government, so there must be no significant change in ownership or control unless the specific change is endorsed by a referendum.

In 2017 the BBC Charter is due for renewal and the government elected in 2015 may well wish to privatise the country's most valuable asset. A law requiring a prior referendum must be in place before that can happen
