Petition Action

Require political adverts to be truthful & factually accurate

Petition Details

Electoral law doesn’t require claims in political campaigns to be truthful or factually accurate. We think this must change to ensure that citizens can trust what they see broadcast, on billboards or in any written media and to prevent falsehoods swaying votes of the British public.

Additional Information

We think the public should be able to trust political parties to present factual information in their campaigns that has documented sources that can be fact checked. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) holds companies accountable and we think political parties must be accountable. Following the 1997 General Election, the Committee of Advertising Practice decided to exclude political advertising from the ASA’s remit. We think there needs to be change.
