Remove tax threshold creating 60%+ marginal rate for £100k incomes
We urge the UK Government to revise the tax threshold causing an excessive marginal rate. Possible solutions include:
- Removing the personal allowance taper for fairer taxation.
- Creating a smoother transition for earners above £100k.Assessing effects on skilled professionals and incentives.
The £100k tax trap creates a 60%+ marginal tax rate due to the personal allowance taper, discouraging career progression and pushing people into salary sacrifice schemes and pensions to avoid excessive taxation. This reduces taxable income, meaning less government revenue and making the system counterproductive.
We urge the UK Government to revise or remove this threshold for a fairer tax system by:
- Eliminating the personal allowance taper to restore fairness.
- Smoothing tax transition beyond £100k.
- Reassessing impact on skilled professionals and incentives.
A reform would boost productivity, encourage growth, and end unfair financial penalties on hardworking individuals.
