Petition Details

It shall be unlawful for any person, group, or institution to engage in or promote acts of violence, coercion, or discrimination on the basis of religion. This includes incitement to religious hatred or the justification of harm toward others based on religious doctrine.

Additional Information

Violence, coercion, or discrimination justified by religion must not be tolerated. This law ensures freedom of belief while prohibiting harm in its name. By holding accountable those who incite violence or hatred through faith, we protect all religions and promote mutual respect in a diverse society

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Acts of violence, coercion, or discrimination justified by religion are already illegal under several laws.

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 enhances penalties for religiously aggravated offences, the Equality Act 2010 prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, and the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 criminalises inciting religious hatred.
