Introduce inclusivity pots of differing pens/pencils in primary schools.
As a children's Occupational Therapist I feel strongly that when it comes to writing implements, one type does not fit all. Primary classroom tables should have an inclusivity pot of differing pens/pencils/scissors and fidgets allowing children to chose their preferred writing tool from reception.
Children need to be able to explore different options to see what feels right for them in terms of ease of use, comfort, and manipulation. Not everyone holds a pen the same way, so a variety of pens/pencils should be available to allow children for chose what feels right for them without judgement.
Table inclusivity pots can then lead to the end of pen licences which are outdated, discriminatory, and uninclusive.
Let’s teach handwriting at the right time with the right tools.
