Increase MPs’ salaries to £100,001
An mp currently earns £93,904 (£5,418 monthly)
Increase their salary to £100,001 (£5,713 monthly)
A £295 a month increase
And they will lose access to 30 free hours childcare worth ~£700 per month per child
This may jog them to do something about the £100k tax trap that is killing growth
We sadly have a £100k income tax trap.
Above this threshold, people lose their personal allowance, pushing marginal tax rates above 60%.
On top of that, they lose 30 hours of free childcare and tax free child care – making effective losses even greater (potentially over 100%).
Many professionals, like doctors, turn down extra work because of this. This holds back productivity and growth.
If MPs are in the same boat then maybe it will jog them to finally do something about it.
