Petition Action

Strengthen the legal duty of owners to protect Listed structures from damage

Petition Details

Owners of Listed buildings and structures are currently legally obliged to maintain them. However, in practice many are left vulnerable, with enforcement actions often delayed or ineffective. In some cases, Listed structures have been lost to preventable fires or unlawful damage.

Additional Information

We want the Government to introduce a stronger legal duty on owners of Listed structures to take all reasonable precautions to protect them.

This should include:

Securing the structure against trespass.

Installing adequate fire prevention and suppression systems where appropriate.

Carrying out regular safety inspections with evidence of compliance.

Maintaining adequate insurance to cover restoration in the event of damage.
