Petition Action

Stop digital ID that is optional in name but mandatory in practice.

Petition Details

Digital ID must not be introduced in a way that is optional in name but mandatory in practice. Forcing citizens to hand over biometrics to work or access services is coercion, insecure, and risks mass surveillance. Existing IDs already work without new threats.

Additional Information

Digital ID that is optional in name but mandatory in practice is coercion. No system is unhackable; stolen biometrics can’t be changed. One login risks surveillance and exclusion. Before any digital ID, the UK needs a Digital Bill of Rights to protect privacy, limit overreach, and keep participation truly optional.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.

You may wish to sign this petition, which calls for a similar action: "Do not introduce Digital ID cards" petition.parliament.uk/petitions/730194
