Petition Action

Give the Home Secretary the same powers to ban static assemblies as marches

Petition Details

We are calling for a change to the law so that static assemblies can be banned by the Home Secretary where there is a serious risk of public disorder.

Additional Information

Under section 13 of the Public Order Act 1986, the Home Secretary can ban a march if police believe there is a risk of serious public disorder that cannot be prevented by section 12 powers. Static assemblies do not fall under this category. The police can only impose conditions on assemblies or seek a ban on assemblies that involve trespass under section 14A of the Act.
