Improve safety for E-Bikes and E-Scooters to reduce injuries
• Make helmets mandatory
• Introduce drink/drug limits, with enforceable testing powers
• Raise minimum age FOR USE to 18
• Cap rental e-bike/scooter speeds at 12 mph nationwide
• Require safety inspections and minimum maintenance standards
• Strengthen penalties against dangerous riding
E-bikes & e-scooters must be made safer in UK towns and cities. At present, children as young as 14 can ride heavy, powerful bikes, which are often poorly maintained, without helmets, while rental firms’ 18+ limits are often poorly enforced. Riders use them at night, sometimes after drinking or drug use, at speeds fast enough to kill or cause life-changing injuries. Without swift action, preventable deaths and life-changing injuries will continue to rise. The law is not keeping up with their use.
