Petition Action

Review fairness of Vehicle Excise Duty

Petition Details

Government should review whether Vehicle Excise Duty remains fair and appropriate, given that local and regional authorities are changing the road space and access available for private vehicles through low-traffic neighbourhoods, bus gates/lanes, and expanded cycle lanes.

Additional Information

Vehicle Excise Duty is a national tax on vehicle ownership, yet we believe the ability of drivers to use their vehicles is increasingly restricted by local transport schemes that reduce road space for cars. Many drivers feel they are paying the same or higher taxes while receiving less utility and access in return. Government should examine whether VED remains a fair and suitable form of taxation in the context of changing transport policies and the balance between private and public road use.
