Retain the automatic right to jury trial for all indictable offences.
Protect the right to be tried by a jury of peers. Jury trials are a vital safeguard against misuse of state power and ensure fair, community-based decisions. Court backlogs should be reduced through investment and efficiency, not by restricting jury trials.
“Jury trials are a cornerstone of justice in the UK and provide essential protection for ordinary people against wrongful conviction and misuse of authority. Reducing or removing them would weaken transparency and public confidence. The justice system needs proper resourcing, modernisation, and long-term planning to address backlogs, not the erosion of fundamental rights that have protected citizens for centuries. The government has NO mandate to change out ancient rights.
