The right to trial-by-jury must not be reduced
This dangerous proposal should be immediately dropped and the Minister who proposed it should be censured.
The UK government is proposing to throw away one of the defining elements of UK democracy (which is widely respected around world) for the crass reason that it will “reduce the backlog in the courts”. This latter claim is not proven but what is proven is that trial-by-jury is a bulwark against discrimination in the legal system
