Require food manufacturers to show the presence of Ultra Processed ingredients
Modify existing food labelling laws to include the requirement for manufacturers to add a clear and appropriately sized and placed indicator of the level of processing that the ingredients of their product have undergone, using the internationally-recognised Nova Classification system.
A growing body of evidence suggests that ultra-processed foods are behind the modern increases in chronic health conditions, including alzheimers, cancer, obesity, diabetes and others. These conditions lead to many preventable deaths, the loss of quality of life for millions and costs the NHS millions every year.
Requiring manufacturers to clearly indicate the presence of UPFs will empower the public to make healthy choices and could save many lives and significant amounts of public funding.
