Petition Action

End the UK Consumer Gap: Student Rights, Accountability and EU-Level Protections

Petition Details

Review the UK’s consumer-only classification of students. Align doctoral researchers with EU contractual or employment rights to ensure fair remedies, protect scholars, strengthen accountability, and maintain global research investment and trust.

Additional Information

UK students are classified only as consumers, with limited access to justice when agreements fail. Unlike EU scholars, who benefit from employee-style protections and stronger enforcement routes, UK students now lack external safeguards and accountability.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We do not know what specific protections or safeguards you are referring to that do not already exist, and would like to see introduced.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
