Petition Action

The UK Government should create the post of LGBTI Envoy, to promote the rights of LGBTI people throughout the world.

Additional Information

Responding to a parliamentary question from SNP MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford, Foreign Office minister David Lidington has ruled out UK Government support for the creation of a special LGBTI Envoy.

The United States has already appointed their first LGBTI human rights envoy, Randy Berry, in an effort to promote LGBT rights internationally.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced her support for an envoy, and has committed SNP MPs to supporting the creation of such a post “to promote the rights of LGBTI people throughout the word, as an integral part of UK foreign policy”.

UK Labour Party leader Ed Miliband has also previously stated his support for the initative, announcing in 2014 that he would appoint Lord Michael Cashman to the role under a future Labour government.
