Remove driving licence renewal restrictions for type 1 diabetics

Petition Details

Upon declaring their condition to the DVLA, people with insulin-treated type 1 diabetes are currently required to renew their Driving Licence every three years. We think this is unfair and unnecessary. Renewal should be every 10 years, like it is for most other people.

Additional Information

We think the three-year restriction serves no purpose. If a type 1 diabetic experienced any deterioration in their ability to drive due to mismanagement of their condition, they would need to report it to the DVLA regardless. We think well-managed type 1 diabetes does not affect the ability to drive. It is unfair to expect type 1 diabetics on insulin treatment to renew their licences more often.
