Petition Action

Require Protection for Cultural Identity of Gypsy & Traveller Children in Care

Petition Details

Require local authorities to prioritise placement of Gypsy and Traveller children with Gypsy and Traveller foster carers where safe and appropriate, and by provide better cultural awareness training for social workers.

Additional Information

Gypsy and Traveller children are a recognised ethnic group, yet when they enter care their cultural identity is often ignored. Many are placed with carers who do not understand their traditions, values or way of life, which can lead to loss of identity and emotional harm. Cultural identity for all ethnic groups should be protected in care placements.
