Stop any inclusion of financial penalty clauses in future UK–EU agreements
Oppose any financial penalty clauses in UK–EU talks. We call on the UK Government to reject any provision in future UK–EU agreements that would require Britain to pay substantial financial compensation if a future government chose to withdraw from or alter the agreement.
Any agreement that imposes financial punishment on future UK governments for changing policy, in our view, undermines parliamentary sovereignty and democratic accountability. Such clauses could bind future electorates to decisions they did not vote for and restrict the ability of elected governments to respond to changing public mandates. International agreements should allow lawful withdrawal without punitive financial penalties.
