Petition Action

Introduce clear statutory rules and guidance on rent abatement

Petition Details

I think the law on rent abatements (rent reductions due to disrepair) is unclear. Landlords can refuse rent reductions even where serious repair issues may exist, forcing tenants to go to court. I propose statutory rent reduction bands, similar to Vento bands used in employment law.

Additional Information

I believe current rent abatement law is complex and unclear, and can allow some landlords to take advantage of tenants and cause lengthy legal delays. Introducing clear rent abatement bands would protect tenants, promote consistency, fairness, and help landlords comply with the law.
