Government to review funding and regulations for Medical Fitness to drive
Increase Grant Funding to Driving Mobility Centres to prevent further centre closures. Extend the responsibility to declare a medical condition to the DVLA to include any medical professional who confirms the diagnosis. Enhance control of the regulatory management of Driving Mobility Centres.
The Department for Transport grant funding does not cover the cost of delivering the service. Short-fall is covered by the NHS Trust the centre falls under or by charitable donations in the case of charity-run centres.
Current rules pertaining to self-declaration of a medical condition are inadequate. They rely solely on the licence holder reporting their condition. Estimates suggest 3.4 million drivers have an undeclared medical condition.
All driving standards should be regulated by Government.
