To issue guidance to prevent glorification of British Somaliland.
We ask the UK Government to formally acknowledge Britain’s role in creating the Somaliland Protectorate and issue clear guidance to councils, institutions, and venues. This will ensure colonial history is not misused to justify political claims or romanticise “British Somaliland
Some members of the UK-based Somaliland community are increasingly organising local events glorifying British Somaliland and its colonial legacy. These activities misrepresent historical facts and perpetuate British colonial frameworks that have no contemporary legal or political legitimacy, risking division within British communities. We ask the Government to clarify historical facts, issue formal guidance or policy, and support community-led engagement and lawful oversight.
