Review the mandatory fortification of non-wholemeal wheat flour with folic acid.
We call on the UK Government to review and remove the mandatory fortification of non-wholemeal wheat flour with folic acid. We ask the Government to ensure that unfortified flour remains available and that flour products are clearly labelled so consumers can make informed dietary choices.
The UK Government introduced mandatory folic acid fortification of non-wholemeal wheat flour as a public health measure.
What We Want the Government to Do:
Review the current requirement for mandatory folic acid fortification
Remove the blanket mandate and allow unfortified flour to be produced and sold
Require clear labelling of flour products indicating whether folic acid has been added
Consult with consumers, health professionals, and food producers when reviewing the policy
