Allocate Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) to Proper, Long‑Term Road Repairs in the UK
Allocate a greater and clearly defined proportion of VED revenue directly to road maintenance and resurfacing.
- Provide long‑term, funding to local authorities, enabling planned, cost‑effective maintenance rather than reactive patching.
VED hasn’t funded roads for 89 years, yet traffic and vehicle weight have risen sharply. Heavier EVs add further strain, accelerating wear. Most damage starts at weak joints and edges where water enters. Quick patches don’t last. The UK needs durable resurfacing with proper materials and sealed edges to prevent repeated failures.
