Petition Action

Review traffic penalty laws to protect victims of driving licence identity fraud

Petition Details

We call on the Government to conduct a review of traffic penalty laws and how take into account the risk of accused drivers being the victims of identity fraud.

Additional Information

Someone could steal your name and driving licence number, commit a speeding offence, and give your details to the police. You then receive the penalty notice even though you were not there, did not drive the car, and were not insured on it. In our view, the time which a victim of such crimes has to try to rectify matters with the relevant agencies are too short and deadlines are not paused when such fraud has been reported. We call on the Government to conduct a review to ensure victims are protected and offenders face serious action.
