Petition Action

Introduce Pet Licence for cats and dogs and require reporting cat collisions

Petition Details

Introduce a national Pet Licence scheme for cat and dog ownership, linked to microchipping and responsible care. Amend the Road Traffic Act 1988 to make road traffic collisions involving cats legally reportable, like collisions involving dogs and livestock.

Additional Information

Microchipping improves traceability but does not prevent abandonment, neglect or irresponsible ownership. A Pet Licence scheme would improve accountability and support enforcement and animal welfare. Drivers must report collisions involving dogs and livestock, but not cats. Making cat collisions reportable would help injured cats receive assistance, allow owners to be informed via microchips, and support road safety by identifying collision hotspots and speeding issues.
