Petition Action

Ban the use of facial recognition software & require consent for biometric data

Petition Details

We call for a law to make the use of facial recognition technologies by all actors, including police and security services, illegal. Such a law should require written consent for the collection of any biometric data, with full right of deletion preserved.

Additional Information

We believe individual liberty and the rule of law are cornerstone British Values and they're what make Britain the country that it is. We think a tolerant country which values individual liberties and rule of law does not collect, or allow anyone to collect, biometric data of its citizens without their full, prior, informed consent. In addition, we think there are also pragmatic objections, in Britain and the US there are myriad instances of people being wrongly identified. The EU has taken steps to regulate this technology.
