Make car insurance fair and affordable for young drivers
Ask the Government to investigate and act on excessive car insurance costs for young drivers by tackling anti-competitive practices, improving pricing transparency, supporting safe-driver schemes, and exploring a government-backed option to make essential cover affordable.
Young drivers face premiums that often exceed the value of their cars, limiting access to work, education, apprenticeships, and caring duties, especially in rural and poorly served areas. While risk must be priced fairly, there is concern that market practices, limited competition for younger age groups, and opaque pricing structures are pushing costs beyond what is reasonable. The Government should work with the CMA and FCA to review the market and deliver fairer entry-level insurance.
