Reduce Interest on Student Loans & Cap Total Debt at One Year’s Average Salary
We call on the Government to:
1 Reduce interest on student debt
2 Cap total student debt to one year’s average UK salary to ensure:
- No graduate leaves university with an unmanageable debt
- Repayments proportionate to earnings
- Public servants with lower incomes are not financially penalised
As a graduate of 2003, I'm appalled that today’s graduates have university debts larger than the cost of my first home. In our view higher education is essential to the UK’s future prosperity, and free or affordable education has always been the backbone of advanced, socially mobile societies. I believe ours entrenches inequality through a disproportionate financial burden: those of lower income, disabled, ethnic minorities, female, transgender carry the heaviest burden. I believe this is unjust, unethical, and economically short sighted.
If you want to sign this petition (as opposed to merely discuss it), you need to do that on the government's e-Petitions website.
