Introduce fair rent caps aligned with council and social housing costs
We call on the Government to introduce fair rent caps that align private rents with council and social housing costs, to ensure working households can access affordable, stable housing and are not penalised for being in employment.
Private rents have increased far faster than wages and living standards, intensifying competition and pushing working households out of secure housing. While council and social rents are regulated to reflect affordability, private rents remain largely unaligned. This creates inequality between tenants and places financial strain on those in work. A streamlined rent cap system would support stability, fairness, and long-term housing security.
