Make littering from a vehicle a driving offence with penalty points”
Make littering from a vehicle a motoring offence that results in penalty points on the driver’s licence, in addition to any financial penalty. This should apply where litter is thrown from a moving or stationary vehicle on public roads.
Litter thrown from vehicles harms the environment, endangers wildlife, and creates hazards for other road users. It also costs local authorities millions each year to clear roadside rubbish. Current penalties are mainly fines, which many offenders ignore or do not see as a serious deterrent. Penalty points would create a stronger deterrent and encourage drivers to take responsibility for waste from their vehicles.
